The conference was open for a broad range of actors engaged with different aspects of of regional sustainable development work from both public and private sector organisations. The program seeked to meet the interests of actors operating at local, regional and (inter)national level. Equally, practitioners from all Nordic countries were encouraged to participate. The conference had international relevance, although giving priority to the Nordic perspective, and focused oncross-border experience sharing.
The program of the Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium 2005 is based on the synthesis of the 2004 symposium, summarized in the publication “The Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium at Yale: Advancing the Study of Industry and Environment”, available at www.yale.edu/environment/publications/index.html. Four key issues were identified for further research and discussion: 1) definition of industrial symbiosis, 2) implementation of industrial symbiosis, 3) quantification of benefits linked to industrial symbiosis and 4) the role of other disciplines. The objective of the symposium is to identify and discuss on-going theoretical and empirical research and continue the dialog in light of the agenda from 2004 and these current trends.
