INDUSTRIAL SYMBIOSIS RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM 2005
Stockholm, June 11, 2005In this page you can find information about the background of the symposium, about its objective, and its programme.
The first-ever global Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium was held at Yale Campus University from January 7-9, 2004 initiated by Prof. Marian Chertow and the Yale Center for Industrial Ecology. Here more than 30 researchers from 15 countries were invited to discuss the current state of knowledge in the field of industrial symbiosis and related areas such as by-product synergy, eco-industrial parks, and resource productivity. Holding a series of follow-up events was among the future objectives agreed upon in this symposium. In pursuit of this objective, a group of Scandinavian colleagues took the responsibility to arrange two follow up events in 2005, funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. The first one of these is the research symposium outlined below, that aims to advance the discussions initiated at Yale, and targets the academic and research community. This first event will take place in Stockholm, June 11, 2005. The second follow-up event will take place in the Copenhagen-Lund area on October 5-6 2005, and is projected to focus dominantly on industry and Industrial Symbiosis related practices in the Nordic Countries. This second event will be arranged by an alliance of 14 Danish/Swedish universities - Oresund Science Region/Oresund Environment Academy.
The program of the Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium 2005 is based on the synthesis of the 2004 symposium, summarized in the publication “The Industrial Symbiosis Research Symposium at Yale: Advancing the Study of Industry and Environment”, available at www.yale.edu/environment/publications/index.html. Four key issues were identified for further research and discussion: 1) definition of industrial symbiosis, 2) implementation of industrial symbiosis, 3) quantification of benefits linked to industrial symbiosis and 4) the role of other disciplines. The objective of the symposium is to identify and discuss on-going theoretical and empirical research and continue the dialog in light of the agenda from 2004 and these current trends.
